A herd of nearly 30 elephants destroyed paddy worth Rs 7L recently; farmers submit memo
B R UDAYA KUMAR @Hassan

ELEPHANTS continued to wreak havoc in several taluks of Hassan district. The jumbos raiding standing crop and attacking farmers and labourers has become common in the district.

The elephant menace has become a headache for the forest department and elected representatives who are unable to combat the menace. The forest department has failed to check the elephants from entering the human habitats despite crores of rupees being spent on construction of rail barricades and solar fencing at forest border areas in the district.

The elephant corridor and elephant conservation and care centre (Ane Dhama) projects are gathering dust at government levels since a decade.
