On December 26, 2004, about 6,065 people in composite Nagapattinam district perished in the tsunami while thousands of the others escaped with injuries. Those who perished when the giant sea waves struck include hundreds in Velankanni, several of whom were pilgrims and tourists. Their family members descended on the town on Thursday and paid silent tributes at the Velankanni tsunami memorial.
