THE agriculture and farmers' welfare department has been making efforts to enhance the cultivation area of millets and increase production through various programmes but farmers express concern over the lack of value-addition facilities and marketing avenues.

In the current season farmers of nine blocks in the district have cultivated millets on about 1.11 lakh acres.

Mannachanallur, Musiri, Thottiyam, T Pettai, Thuraiyur, Uppiliapuram, Manapparai, Marungapuri and Vaiyampatti are the main blocks where farmers cultivate millets. They raise more than 10 varieties of millets and non-millets, including foxtail millet, small millet, finger millet, ragi, sorghum and moth beans.
