OPPOSITION parties and various organisations in Assam on Thursday demanded that the government begin the process of detecting and deporting the illegal Bangladeshi immigrants who entered the state after March 24, 1971.
The demand stemmed from the Supreme Court's judgment that upheld Section 6A of the Citizenship Act, validating the 1971 cut-off date for granting Indian citizenship to the immigrants.
The 1971 cut-off date is linked to the Assam Accord of 1985, signed between the then Rajiv Gandhi government and the All Assam Students' Union (AASU) at the end of the six-year-long bloody Assam agitation. The accord says the illegal immigrants, irrespective of religious faith who entered Assam after March 25, 1971, are to be detected and deported.
