National film awards: South industry retains its hot streak

SOUTH Indian films dominated the 70th National Awards announced in New Delhi on Friday. While Malayalam film Aattam won Best Feature Film, Rishab Shetty bagged the Best Actor Award for Kantara and Nithya Menen (Thiruchitrambalam) shared the Best Actress Award with Manasi Parekh (The Kutch Express). Ponniyin Selvan I won several key awards, including Best Music Direction-Background Score (AR Rahman), Best Sound Design (Anand Krishnamoorthi), and Best Cinematography (Ravi Varman).

This is Rahman's seventh National Award, the most won by any music director in India. Dhanush-starrer Thiruchitrambalam also picked up another award - Best Choreography -for Jani and Sathish Krishnan's work in the Megam Karukatha number. KGF Chapter 2, Brahmastra Part I, and Fouja also won awards in key categories. Aattam also won for Best Editing (Mahesh Bhuvanend) and Best Screenplay (Anand Ekarshi), the latter of which was shared with the Hindi film Gulmohar.
