The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has sought a detailed report from the District Magistrate (DM) of West Burdwan district within eight weeks regarding cases of death due to silicosis in Barabhui Village within Salanpur Police Station limits.
In Salanpur Block, located in the extreme western region of West Burdwan district on the Asansol-Jharkhand border, a number of people working in a factory engaged in crushing quartz rocks to dust powder have been found suffering from silicosis, while a few people have already died.
Subol Roy, one of the labourers who was named in the complaint sent to the National Human Rights Commission as critically ill due to silicosis, passed away at Apollo Hospitals in Chennai on Thursday, leading to a huge stir.
