LTA completes project to make Singapore streets brighter at night

More than 110,000 street lamps islandwide fall under LTA's purview, and nearly all - more than 99 per cent - now use the newer, more energy-efficient lighting system.

The streets in Singapore are brighter and whiter at night after the Land Transport Authority (LTA) recently completed a year-long programme to replace the orange glow of conventional street lamps with clear light-emitting diodes (LEDs).

In response to queries, LTA said some non-LED street lights still need to be replaced as roads built with older high-pressure sodium vapour (HPSV) lamps are routinely handed over to the authority from other agencies.

Hence, while the replacement programme that began in 2014 was completed as planned, the upgrading of street lights will continue as LTA takes over new assets.

LTA told The Sunday Times that the switch to LED has helped to save more than 25 million kWh in energy consumption.
