<p id="1"><strong>Hyderabad: </strong>With eyes on the coveted World Heritage City tag for Hyderabad, the Telangana government has taken up restoration of as many as 40 ancient structures across the city &mdash; including some lesser-known properties. Of these, work on 22 have already been completed while work on the others is still in progress, officials said.</p>
<p id="2">Among those where restoration is currently underway are &mdash; the State Central Library, Shaikpet Sarai, Khursheed Jah Devdi, Julu Kaman and Gulzar Houz Fountain.</p>
<p id="3">&ldquo;The Quli Qutub Shah Urban Development Authority (QQSUDA) is preparing detailed project reports for renovation of the State Library and Julu Kaman in Laad Bazaar while the tender process is underway for the re-construction of Mahboob Chowk (popular as Murgi Chowk) and Gulzar Houz Fountain,&rdquo; said an official.</p>

<p id="2">At the library, for instance, the team is working on restoring over five lakh books and magazines and even some rare palm-leaf manuscripts. Apart from external repairs, work also involves indexing the books and digitising the ones that are in bad condition. &ldquo;In the case of&nbsp;Murgi Chowk, the new market complex coming up there will be two-storied with extensive streetscaping. The focus will also be on integrating hawkers and vendors into these projects to ensure that the tourism experience is not only about the destination but also experiential,&rdquo; the official added.</p>

<p id="2">Arvind Kumar, special chief secretary, municipal administration and urban development (MAUD) said the restoration of heritage sites to their original glory is part of an effort being made to keep the character of Hyderabad intact and uphold what it means to be alive and kicking.</p>
