Nearly a year after a TOI report said that thousands of trees, and not just "163" for which the Uttarakhand administration had sought permission for, were cut without permission in the Corbett Tiger Reserve, the Forest Survey of India has now confirmed that "over 6,000 trees" were felled in the 40-acre dense forest to facilitate the Pakhro Tiger Safari.
The FSI, a premier body for survey of forest wealth in the country under the Union ministry of environment, forest and climate change, had conducted a ground survey of CTR in June 2022, after which its findings confirmed that "thousands of trees were infeed felled, not a few hundred".&nbsp;TOI had reported that on September 2021.
"The FSI report was submitted before the central empowered committee of the Supreme Court a few days ago," said Prakash Lakhchora, deputy director general of FSI.&nbsp;The FSI report said: "The area cleared is estimated at 16.21 ha (40 acres). Trees estimated in this cleared area are 6,093 in number."
Incidentally, the Uttarakhand forest department had sought the ministry's clearance for the project by stating that barely "163" trees would be chopped.
The tiger safari project has been mired in controversy ever since a complaint was filed with the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) on August 26, 2021 by activist Gaurav Bansal.
Bansal said, "Illegal felling of thousands of trees inside CTR is a shame. It shows that illegal trading of trees has taken place. Those responsible must be held accountable."
Following this, the former head of forest force (HoFF) of the state forest department Rajiv Bhartari reached out to FSI seeking help as facts could not be correctly ascertained in a report submitted by forest authorities. It was then that the director of Corbett as well as NTCA recommended that FSI should conduct a "thorough survey". Meanwhile, ina statement on Saturday, the state forest department said that it has "not accepted" the FSI report, and sought further clarifications.
