Hyderabad: In the heart of the city's IT hub, a choking Manikonda Cheruvu gasps for breath. Known as Yellama Cheruvu, the once expansive lake, has fallen prey to encroachments and solid waste dumping.
Experts blame the demand for prime land in the area for the lake shrinking and for pollution levels reaching an all-time high. A construction boom led by the burgeoning IT sector has resulted in truck loads of construction waste being dumped in the cheruvu. On October 9, locals got a taste of the worst after the lake frothed over onto the streets of Lanco&nbsp;Hills.
A video went viral on Twitter after Ranjith Raj, a netizen posted foam from the lake spilling over onto the adjacent street. Tweeting about it, Raj wrote: "Polluted toxic foam washes ashore near Manikonda Cheruvu. It causes serious health issues (sic).&nbsp;@GHMCOnline should investigate this." When TOI visited the area recently, there was thick foam present at the outlet channel of the lake.
Experts say foaming in lake channels is an indication of the presence of Filamentous&nbsp;Bacteria in the waters and surfactants. Elaborating, BV Subba Rao, technical member (Reservoirs and Lakes), Water Domain, BIS India told TOI, that surfactants are usually released into the lake waters from sewerage channels and seepage from underwater pipelines.
"The foam forms when the water flows or drops from a&nbsp;higher place just like how foam forms when we rinse water with detergent. The scope of aquatic life in this water is bleak as the damage done by commercial and domestic waste in the river is almost complete," Rao said.
Even while heading to their swanky software offices, several IT professionals have to pass the foul-smelling lake.
"There was a discussion about the smell among residents recently. We have no idea why this is happening," said Venkat Mamilla, a local. However, he admitted that the area was plagued by encroachments and may be facing several challenges as a result.
This is not the first time lake waters in the city have foamed. Even major lakes like Hussainsagar, Uppal and Saroornagar lakes have witnessed frothing in the past few years. In 2020, toxic foam-filled waters Miyapur lake filled the streets.
