Amid growing IT hub, Manikonda Cheruvu falls prey to encroachments waste dumping

Hyderabad: In the heart of the city's IT hub, a choking Manikonda Cheruvu gasps for breath. Known as Yellama Cheruvu, the once expansive lake, has fallen prey to encroachments and solid waste dumping.

Experts blame the demand for prime land in the area for the lake shrinking and for pollution levels reaching an all-time high. A construction boom led by the burgeoning IT sector has resulted in truck loads of construction waste being dumped in the cheruvu. On October 9, locals got a taste of the worst after the lake frothed over onto the streets of Lanco Hills.
