Ahmedabad: Arvind Kejriwal's AAP appeared to implode in poll-bound Gujarat on Friday after journalist turned-politician Isudan Gadhvi was named the party's CM face for the two-phase December election, prompting instant dissent from national joint secretary Indranil Rajyaguru, who quit the party to return to the Congress fold.
Rajyaguru's exit is seen as a setback to AAP's electoral prospects in the state, especially Saurashtra, where he had been lending clout to the party both in terms of money and political base. Known to be among the richest MLAs, Rajyaguru had declared assets worth Rs 140 crore in the 2017 state polls.
"AAP is hoodwinking the people of Gujarat. I had joined AAP because it claimed it would remove BJP from government. Instead,&nbsp;AAP has been working to defeat Congress," said the former Rajkot East MLA, explaining his decision to jump ship.
AAP's problems may not end with Rajyaguru's exit. Gadhvi being named the party's CM candidate has also upset supporters of Patidar leader Gopal Italia, who was a key player in the 2015 quota stir and helped AAP make a dent on debut in the Surat Municipal Corporation polls last year by winning 27 out of 120 seats.
