Delayed screening raises breast cancer cases in T

Hyderabad: Despite breast cancer being the topmost type of cancer affecting women in Telangana as well as the rest of the country, early detection is extremely low. With most cases detected in advanced stages, a majority of the patients live with the trauma of deformity.

Overall the number of new breast cancer cases in the state has increased from 6900 in 2021 to 7012 so far this year. As per information from the largest government tertiary care cancer institute in the state - MNJ Institute of Oncology and Regional Cancer Centre - a majority of the cases are landing up in the third and fourth stages which makes mastectomy (complete removal of the breast) mandatory.
