<p><strong>New Delhi:&nbsp;</strong>PM Narendra Modi on Thursday strongly argued for expeditious disposal of pending departmental proceedings or corruption charges against government employees while suggesting that departments can be ranked on the parameter of swift disposal of corruption cases.</p>

<p>At the same time, the PM put his weight behind anti-graft institutions such as CVC and said they &ldquo;need not be defensive&rdquo; while tackling corruption even when some people with &ldquo;vested interests&rdquo; keep shouting and trampling on such institutions. &ldquo;I keep repeating that while working for the country and for honesty, we should not be defensive even if controversies are created,&rdquo; he added.</p>

<p>Modi cited how delayed decisions in disciplinary proceedings relating to corruption charges against government employees act as a "sword of Damocles" and this causes maximum harm to honest officers.</p>
<p>He said while the suffering of the corrupt is a different issue, the honest who get caught in this trap of delayed decision-making live the rest of their life with this burden.</p>
<p>"What good do you do to your colleagues by keeping such complaints pending for a long time?" he asked while addressing an event on Vigilance Awareness Week of the Central Vigilance Commission.</p>
<p>Modi asked the agencies to ensure that the corrupt are not spared, no matter how powerful they are and these&nbsp;agencies have the responsibility to see that no corrupt person gets "political or social refuge".</p>
<p>Modi said, "Every corrupt person should be held accountable by society. It is important to build such an atmosphere. We are seeing that paeans are being sung for people already proven corrupt. People calling themselves honest do not feel the shame to go and get photographed with such&nbsp;corrupt people." Highlighting that eradicating corruption affirms confidence of people in the government, the PM claimed that earlier governments not only lost people's confidence but they also failed to trust them. Modi suggested the departments to audit the data of public grievances to find out the root causes of corruption and zero in on departments and persons who are delaying redressal of such complaints.</p>
<p>The PM said too much dependence on foreign goods had also been a big cause of corruption while mentioning how there have been several scams in the defence sector. He added the government's push towards self-reliance in defence manufacturing has put an end to such scams.</p>
