<p id="1">The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), Mumbai, on Saturday seized from Vashi 198 kg of &lsquo;high purity&rsquo; crystal methamphetamine (ice) and 9 kg &lsquo;high purity&rsquo; cocaine worth Rs 1,476 crore which had been smuggled by concealing the stuff among boxes of oranges.</p>
<p id="2">This is one of the biggest seizures of amphetamine and cocaine in the country. Crystal methamphetamine, a synthetic drug and highly addictive, is abused because of the long-lasting euphoric effects it produces. Crystal methamphetamine has a higher purity level and may have longer-lasting and more intense physiological effects. The user who smokes or injects the drug experiences an intense sensation, followed by a high that may last 12 hours or more.</p>
<p>Officials suspect that the drugs were smuggled from South Africa among Valencia oranges and that the smugglers were using Mumbai as a transit point to European countries or the US. &ldquo;South Africa is the hub for all these contraband minus cocaine, which comes from Latin American countries,&rdquo; an official said. The investigations are continuing, officials said. The DRI has arrested the importer and is looking for the customs house agent and the syndicate, including the finance involved in the racket.</p>

<p>Based on intelligence inputs, surveillance was maintained for 10-12 days, with officials looking for consignments of fruits being cleared from some cold storages in Navi Mumbai. On September 30, the team of DRI officers intercepted a truck in Vashi, carrying imported oranges. On examination, the drugs were found concealed in the cartons carrying Valencia oranges. The truck had left the Prabhu Hira Ice &amp; Cold Storage premises in Vashi. Officials said this is a new kind of modus operandi involving concealment of drugs in the boxes of &lsquo;Valencia Oranges&rsquo; imported from South Africa. After clearance of such oranges from the customs area, the goods used to get stored in some cold storages in Vashi.</p>

<p>Officials suspect that the contraband was being shifted to a safer warehouse, from where it would have been taken out of the country. &ldquo;We have arrested the importer, who is being interrogated. Further search operations for identifying and arresting people involved in running the chain of drugs smuggling is on,&rdquo; said an officer.</p>
