Forester trying to stave off jungle siege axed to death

Hyderabad: A forest range officer, Chalmala Srinivasa Rao, 42, was killed in an attack by Guttikoya tribals, while trying to save plantations on forest land freed from squatters in Bhadradri Kothagudem district on Tuesday.

The murder comes amidst an ongoing strife over cultivation rights on podu (forest) land. The assailants attacked Rao with knives and axes in Chandrugonda range in the Bendalapadu beat area of Errabodu in the district.

Chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao announced an ex gratia of Rs 50 lakh to Rao’s family and sought swift and strict punishment to the assailants.
