<p><strong>Hyderabad:&nbsp;</strong>A forest range officer, Chalmala Srinivasa Rao, 42, was killed in an attack by Guttikoya tribals, while trying to save plantations on forest land freed from squatters in Bhadradri Kothagudem district on Tuesday.</p>

<p id="2">The murder comes amidst an ongoing strife over cultivation rights on podu (forest) land. The assailants attacked Rao with knives and axes in Chandrugonda range in the Bendalapadu beat area of Errabodu in the district.</p>

<p id="1">Chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao announced an ex gratia of Rs 50 lakh to Rao&rsquo;s family and sought swift and strict punishment to the assailants.</p>
<p id="2">One family member would be given a government job even as Rao&rsquo;s salary would continue to be disbursed till his official retirement date, the CM said. A native of Erlapudi village in Khammam district, Rao is survived by his wife, son, and daughter.</p>

<p>&ldquo;Rao and forest section officer, Rama Rao, rushed to the spot after a plantation watcher tipped him off about tribals herding cattle in the forest and trampling upon plantations. While he was negotiating with the Guttikoya tribals, a mob surrounded him and struck his head with an axe. Rao lay sprawled in a pool of blood, while his colleague rushed to a nearby town to mobilize reinforcements and medical aid. A critically injured Rao was taken to a hospital at Chandrugonda, where doctors referred him to Khammam KIMS Hospital. Rao succumbed to injuries while on way there. We lodged a complaint with police,&rdquo; Ranjeet Nayak said.</p>

<p>Last year, Srinivasa Rao was honoured with the prestigious KVS Babu gold medal for his exemplary work in preserving forests.</p>

M Raja Ramana Reddy, president of the Telangana State Forest Officers Association, said, &ldquo;It&rsquo;s an unfortunate incident and I strongly condemn the assault on Srinivasa Rao, who was a hardworking officer.&rdquo;</p>
