‘Grooms’ help US agencies bust green card fraud

A host of US agencies joined hands to conduct an operation to bust this racket and netted several Indian nationals, including Dishant and Shweta. They have been charged with a conspiracy to commit fraud, according to a US Department of Justice release.

Mumbai: A ‘contract marriage’ may seem like a desi jugaad to obtain the green card faster. Or so it appeared to Dishant Patel, 24, and Shweta Patel, 23, both Indian citizens living in Indiana in the US, who didn’t think twice before entering into fraudulent marriages for a quicker route to a green card.

Unfortunately for them, in what could well be a plot for a Bollywood potboiler, the persons they entered into matrimony with turned out to be undercover law enforcement officers who were out there to catch couples entering fraudulent marriages to obtain US citizenship.
