It's responsibility of rich nations to pay for climate damage: Yadav

New Delhi: Environment minister Bhupender Yadav on Thursday said it’s the responsibility of rich nations to compensate developing countries as the current impact of climate change is the result of the developed nations’ historical cumulative emissions of greenhouse gases (GHG).

His remarks came merely four days after a landmark agreement at UN climate talks (COP27) in Sharm el-Sheikh on setting up a ‘loss and damage’ fund for supporting poor vulnerable countries that are victims of climate change. The remark assumes significance as it clarifies the country’s stand over the demand from certain quarters, mainly developed countries, that the big economies like India and China should also contribute to the ‘loss and damage’ fund.
