After his recent conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin in which he stressed the need for an early end to hostilities, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday reiterated the same in a phone conversation with Ukraine President Volodymr Zelenskyy while calling for return to dialogue and diplomacy.
Expressing his "firm conviction" that there can be no military solution to the conflict and also India's readiness to contribute to any peace effort, Modi significantly underlined that endangerment of nuclear facilities could have far-reaching and catastrophic consequences for public health and the environment.
This is important in the context of concerns, as expresses also by the IAEA, that the risk of a nuclear accident at Ukraine's Zaporizhzhya Nuclear Power Plant has increased because of ongoing fighting in the area. Ukraine has accused Russia of shelling the plant and the issue figured in foreign minister S Jaishankar's recent meeting with Ukraine deputy PM Denys Shmyhal in New York.
"The PM emphasized the importance India attaches to the safety and security of nuclear installations, including in Ukraine," said the Indian government in a statement.&nbsp;Jaishankar had told the UNSC in a recent meeting on Ukraine that the nuclear issue if of particular anxiety.
In his conversation with Zelenskyy, Modi again reiterated the importance of respecting the UN Charter, international law, and the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all states. While talking to Putin on the sidelines of the SCO summit in Samarkand, Modi had publicly thanked both Russia and Ukraine for evacuation of Indian students from Ukraine.
Despite the renewed push for ending the conflict, as evident from Modi's remarks to both Putin and Zelenskyy, India's position on the issue hasn't really changed. This was obvious from the recent UNSC vote on a resolution condemning Russia for annexing four regions of Ukraine in which India was among the four countries which abstained. Russia has accused Western leaders of misinterpreting Modi's remarks to Putin with Russian ambassador to India Denis Alipov saying Moscow didn't notice any change in India's stand on the conflict.
Modi, in an earlier conversation too with Zelenskyy, had offered India's support to any peace effort. Alipov, however, said recently he wasn't aware of any proposal or even "intention" about India mediating in the conflict.
The two leaders also touched upon important areas of bilateral cooperation, following up on their last meeting in Glasgow in November 2021.
