<p id="1"><strong>Hyderabad: </strong>A political autopsy of the Munugode verdict shows while the Left parties kept the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) afloat and even helped it romp home with aplomb, BJP in fact made mammoth gains by ploughing into the Congress vote share.</p>
<p id="2">Political strategist Errabelli Dayakar Rao said, &ldquo;TRS maintained its base because of its welfare schemes and improved its share with help from the communists. BJP, on the other hand, ate into the Congress vote share. In fact, the grand old party&rsquo;s below-par performance helped BJP bag 38% votes.&rdquo;</p>
<p id="3">Political analyst Professor Ganta Chakrapani said, &ldquo;BJP took a huge risk by banking on one of the wealthiest politicians in Telangana for the by-election, but the plan didn&rsquo;t work. On the other hand, it was tough for TRS too as it had to work hard with all its ministers, MLAs, MPs and MLCs campaigning to win the seat.&rdquo;</p>
<p id="4">Talking about the Munugode verdict&rsquo;s larger ramifications, experts say the 2023 outcome will depend on division of anti-incumbency votes. If Congress, which was decimated in its pocket borough of Munugode, continues to underperform, it will be a direct fight between TRS and BJP. Or it will be a triangular fight.</p>
<p id="5">Talking to <strong>TOI</strong>, Rajanikanth said, &ldquo;In 2018, TRS garnered 47% vote share, which plummeted to 40% in three bypolls. The pink party has to introspect why it lost the crucial 10%. The party cannot deny anti-incumbency is setting in. Remember, even in Munugode, it secured 43% vote share only by riding piggyback on CPI and CPM.&rdquo;</p>
<p>In the 2018 elections, TRS lost Munugode with 37.5% vote share. And in 2014, TRS bettered its performance with a 38.1% share to win the poll. While South Telangana, particularly Nalgonda, has been a Congress bastion, the party lost all three elections, including Huzurnagar, Nagarjun Sagar and Munugode. An internecine war and lack of funds and resources has decimated the grand old party.&nbsp;</p>
