A mid Covid, which disrupted mobility, new enrolment of international students in the US jumped 80% in 2021-22 to reach 2.62 lakh, a tad less than the pre-pandemic year's figure of about 2.68 lakh. With the new enrolments, the number of Indians in various stages of higher education in the US has risen by about 19% to 1.99 lakh, accounting for 21% of the total international students in America (9.48 lakh).
Indian students are now the second largest cohort after China, which recorded a drop for the fourth straight year to touch 2.9 lakh the two countries make up over half of the international students on US campuses.
India's upward trajectory was sustained in fall 2022 (August-September), the snapshot Open Doors survey of a limited number of institutions revealed.
