New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Friday agreed with senior advocate Indira Jaising, who has petitioned for live streaming of hearings in all courts, to look into her suggestion to ban circulation of short video clips in social media about judicial proceedings to present a distorted picture about the judges and lawyers.
CJI D Y Chandrachud, sitting with Justice Hima Kohli, said he was endeavouring to create a national judicial telecast platform, independent of the YouTube channel, for live streaming of court proceedings in the SC, HCs and all district courts across the country.
&ldquo;We now have evolved a uniform regulatory framework for live streaming of court proceedings. Most High Courts have adopted it&nbsp;and started live telecast of their proceedings. At present the constitution bench proceedings in SC are live telecast on YouTube channel of the National Informatics Centre. We are looking beyond it and endeavouring to have our own judicial live streaming platform,&rdquo; the CJI said.
Jaising said that one has observed that small video clips from proceedings before the HCs and SC are circulated routinely in the social media to present a distorted or out-of-context picture. &ldquo;The Supreme Court must evolve a mechanism to curb this nefarious tendency by involving provisions of the copyright law and I-T law,&rdquo; she suggested.
Justice Chandrachud agreed and said &ldquo;Anyone can prepare a small clip of the proceedings suiting their understanding or design. One way of regulating it is to grant access to live-streaming to only bona fide litigants, lawyers and other stakeholders. Sometimes the video clips of the proceedings are prepared in such a way to present a distorted picture. We are looking into it.&rdquo;
Jaising said that transcribing of district courts and high courts would help the appellate courts to understand the arguments made before the courts of subordinate jurisdiction as many a time it is found that the district courts or the HCs do not record the arguments advanced by the lawyers.&nbsp;
