Come winter, many wildlife enthusiasts head for Himalayan heights to spot snow leopards, a critically endangered species-found in Ladakh, Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Sikkim, and Arunachal Pradesh.

Unique model to tie snow leopard tourism with habitat protection

Though only a few are lucky enough to catch a sight of the elusive big cats, the environment ministry in association with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has been implementing a unique model to conserve their habitats so that more and more people can have an opportunity to spot them.

The model involving local communities in Ladakh under the 'Secure Himalaya' project will not only protect the big cats but provide alternative livelihood opportunities to the people in the region.
