<p><strong>New Delhi:&nbsp;</strong>Reminding that the 1984 anti-Sikh riots are a &ldquo;dark spot&rdquo; in the history of the country, the National Commission for Minorities has expressed concern that even though a number of relief packages were announced by the central and the state governments, there are several instances where the relief measures have not reached the families, despite 38 years having elapsed. NCM chairperson Iqbal Singh Lalpura has written to states on the matter.</p>

<p id="2">The NCM has asked the states for the list of cases registered, number of persons killed and injured, details of property damaged, status of convictions in cases and award of compensation to the victims. The NCM has also asked for details of when the compensation was awarded and to how many. In a press statement, the NCM said, &ldquo;the 1984 anti-Sikh riots is a dark spot in the history of the country wherein thousands of innocent persons belonging to the Sikh community were killed, dislocated and harassed physically, emotionally and destroyed economically&rdquo;.</p>
<p id="3">The NCM has taken cognisance of the representations received and has taken up the concerns raised with nine states/UT &mdash; Delhi, Haryana, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, J&amp;K, Odisha, Jharkhand, Bhar and West Bengal. The commission has been writing to the CMs of the states on the matter since October last year. The latest letter was sent this October. Details of inquiry committees constituted in each state have also been sought. Lalpura said detailed replies are still awaited. &ldquo;We will not give up till justice is done, the states must act fast,&rdquo; he added.</p>

<p>Noting that there were allegations that police officials were also involved in the riots, the NCM has asked states to provide details of officials against whom action was taken and officials against whom action is yet to be initiated.</p>
