<p><strong>New Delhi:&nbsp;</strong>Barely two weeks after the country&rsquo;s U-23 wrestlers were denied visas by the Spanish embassy doubting they might &lsquo;overstay&rsquo; in Pontevedra, the Indian taekwondo squad bound for the World Championships in Mexico&rsquo;s Guadalajara, is also fearing meeting the same fate.</p>

<p id="2">The Embassy of Mexico here has refused to process the visa application of a 20-member Indian contingent for the Worlds &ndash; scheduled from November 13-20 &ndash; as its diplomatic mission wants a letter approving the taekwondo team&rsquo;s visit to Guadalajara from the Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The Namdev Shirgaonkar-led Indian taekwondo body (IT) has invitation letters from the World Taekwondo (WT), Mexican sports ministry and the local organising committee (LOC), which were required for participation at the Worlds. TOI is in possession of these letters.</p>

<p>The event holds great significance for athletes participating from around the world, providing them the opportunity to earn valuable ranking points in the &lsquo;Road to Paris Olympics 2024&rsquo;. It&rsquo;s the first time in three years that the Worlds will take place following the cancellation of previous two editions in 2020 and 2021 owing to the Covid-19 pandemic. The last time it took place was in Manchester, UK from May 15 to 19, 2019.</p>

The embassy received the letter from their sports ministry in the last week of October after we personally spoke to WT president (Chungwon Choue) and LOC members regarding the delay in the processing of visas. Later, the consular officer demanded that an invitation letter from their foreign ministry should also be arranged for them. It wasn&rsquo;t required at all. The LOC was surprised they weren&rsquo;t accepting letters from the sports ministry and the world body. We reasoned with them, but to no avail,&rdquo; Kiarash Bahri, World Taekwondo&rsquo;s Coordinator for the Indian federation and IT&rsquo;s chairman of the selection committee, told <strong>TOI </strong>from Mumbai.</p>
