The GMP is not part of the official decisions under the UN framework, but it is considered an important global effort to cut methane emissions which have significantly higher warming potential. Experts noted that limiting warming to 1.5 degree C will require dramatic reductions in global methane emissions of at least 30% by 2030 from 2020 levels. The GMP was launched by the US and European Union at COP26 in Glasgow last year. Currently, the oil and gas sector represents the fastest and deepest methane emissions reductions opportunities to achieve the GMP target.
