Ramani Bhai (36) and Sujatha (31) were seated in the auto holding on to two vessels full of hot sambar and Pongal that they were taking to an 'amma unavagam' (subsidised food canteen run by the Tamil Nadu government) when the vehicle dashed against another auto near Kolathur junction on September 29, 2018. The hot sambar fell on Ramani Bhai, who later succumbed to burns. Sujatha escaped with minor burns
Metropolitan magistrate P Chandrasekar recently sentenced the driver of the auto, Raju (36), to two one-year jail terms for rash driving and for transporting food in a passenger vehicle without proper permits. He will spend one year in jail as the sentences are to run concurrently.
The driver of the second auto, Shekar (51), was sentenced to six months rigorous imprisonment for rash driving.
The main cause of death was negligence on the part of the auto driver, said the magistrate, adding that Raju was transporting hot food, which is considered to be "commercial goods" in a passenger vehicle.
Raju did not have a driving licence, nor did his vehicle have insurance or a fitness certificate.
