The notice was issued under the Mumbai Municipal Corporation (MMC) Act, 1888. The section applied, 488, empowers civic officials to visit any building and ascertain whether any illegal alterations were undertaken.
The term of civic corporators may have ended but BMC has been controlled by the Shiv Sena for over two decades. The civic body's notice to the Ranas states that officials will visit the flat on May 4, or thereafter in order to inspect the premises. Officials said they were acting upon a complaint.
