Mumbai: There were 37 deaths on roads across the state every day last year, which means three deaths every two hours, the highest in recent years.
In the city, fatalities rose in 2021 as compared to 2020 from 349 to 387-but was still less than pre-Covid times. Mumbai continued to be the district with the maximum road accidents (2,230) while Nashik rural topped the chart for the highest number of fatalities (862) in 2021. On deaths, Mumbai slipped a spot in a year to rank 10th among Maharashtra's districts in 2021. Speeding was the number one cause for accidents, followed by drunk driving and lane cutting. The grim data was released by the transport department on Monday.
