LA LIGA
Madrid: At the entrance to the impressive Metropolitano Stadium on the outskirts of the city, a huge banner tells the world that Atletico de Madrid are the 2020-21 La Liga champions.
Atletico sensationally won last season’s title, finishing two points ahead of Real Madrid. Since then, Diego Simeone’s side have endured a difficult time. They not just lost the title but also saw their eternal rivals wrap up the chase last week, with four games still left to be played.
As Real Madrid drives into Metropolitano on Sunday, never mind the absence of ‘pasillo’ or guard of honour, it will make Atletico squirm like never before.
“We have to focus on ourselves,” Atletico’s Uruguayan defender Jose Maria Gimenez told TOI. “The derby is always special, (but) there is lot (more) at stake. We have to qualify for the (UEFA) Champions League.”
