Each year a few thousand techies migrate to the Nordic country. We caught up with three of them.
Bhavya Chaudhry is a cybersecurity expert who ditched the US for Sweden to pursue her Master&rsquo;s at Stockholm University. After the degree, she started working there. Initially, it was for financial reasons, the northern lights, and the beautiful winter. But she soon realised it holds lots of opportunities in cybersecurity.
HOW TO APPLY 
She began by applying for jobs on LinkedIn in her last semester at the university. &ldquo;It usually takes 2-3 months for applications to be processed, so one needs to be patient,&rdquo; she says.
Saswati Mohanty, a DevOps engineer who came to Sweden on an on-site project for an IT services company, says the best thing is that the job market in Sweden is transparent because of the Swedish Public Employment Service (Arbetsf&ouml;rmedlingen). &ldquo;All job postings are first put on the public employment service. If companies do not find the right candidate there, then they move to other options. I applied through both LinkedIn and Arbetsf&ouml;rmedlingen,&rdquo; she says.
She now works at a SaaS company and is simultaneously pursuing her post-graduation. She says Kafka, AWS K8s, SAP, and IBM middleware are some of the major technologies used in Sweden.
FOCUS ON PERSONALITY 
While applying for jobs, keep the CV simple. Attach a personalised covering letter, says Saswati.

Bhavya tweaked her resume based on inputs she got from her interviewers. Getting an interview is the toughest part in Sweden, she says. &ldquo;Once you&rsquo;ve got the interview call, it is easy to get in. Most interviews are based on the personality of the candidate as skills can be learned and taught,&rdquo; she says.
Companies in Sweden like to invest in training, says Swapnil Balwantrao, a senior consultant. He says employees are usually rewarded with a bonus for completing certifications.
WORK VISA - NO PROBLEM 
Visa and sponsorship are usually the last thing on a recruiter&rsquo;s mind. Till the HR round of interview, the visa status is often not discussed. &ldquo;I came on a dependent visa, which automatically gives me the permit to work, unlike other countries. After the technical rounds, where I was asked about what I had done in my previous projects, the company was willing to renew my visa if there was a need,&rdquo; Swapnil says.
GOOD TO LEARN SWEDISH 
It is good to know Swedish. In most MNCs, knowing Swedish is just an added advantage, but some have made it mandatory. There are free courses called Swedish for Immigrants (SFI) that one can enrol for during the job hunt.
FLEXIBLE WORK CULTURE 
There&rsquo;s plenty of flexibility at work. Saswati&rsquo;s company is doing everything to help her finish her Master&rsquo;s degree. It is willing to reduce her working days to four in a week so that she can give her studies enough time. In India, studying while working is challenging, with companies insisting on putting in nine hours each day,&rdquo; she says. Swapnil and Bhavya say that unlike many companies in India, those in Sweden do not micromanage employees.
