New Delhi: A new UN report warns that a status check shows the world is not on track to achieve gender equality by 2030 in keeping with the Sustainable Development Goals. It says that at the current rate of progress, it will take up to 286 years to close gaps in legal protection and remove discriminatory laws, 140 years for women to be represented equally in positions of power and leadership, and at least 40 years to achieve equal representation in national parliaments.
The report draws attention to the fact that the “glass ceiling remains intact” as women are still far from getting equal space with men in managerial roles with data showing that close to 1 in every 3 manager/ supervisor happens to be a woman. Moreover, it is estimated that women hold only 2 in every 10 science, engineering and information and communication technology jobs globally.
