Mumbai: Less than 24 hours after a 71-day-old baby girl was kidnapped from a footpath, city police arrested a couple for the crime and rescued the infant. The baby had been kidnapped from a footpath near St Xavier’s High School in Fort on Tuesday night when her pavement dweller parents were asleep. Police suspect the couple had kidnapped the baby with the intent to sell her.
“We formed eight police teams and traced the accused within 12 hours of registration of the complaint,” said city police commissioner Vivek Phansalkar on Thursday while briefing mediapersons about the detection and handing over the baby to her parents.
Baby Alisha’s father Chakram Shekhar (35), who does odd jobs for a living, touched Phansalkar’s feet and thanked him with tears in his eyes. Manisha Shekhar (30), the mother, was over the moon.
