New Delhi: The Centre on Friday informed the Supreme Court that per capita income of the population in India has increased in real terms by 33.4% in eight years since the enactment of National Food Security Act (NFSA), 2013, taking a large swathe out of the vulnerable section.
“During the last eight years, since the enactment of NFSA, per capita income of population in India has increased in real terms by 33.4%. The rise in per capita income of people is bound to have taken a large number of households to higher income class and they may not be as vulnerable as they were in 2013-14,” it said in an affidavit presented by additional solicitor general Aishwarya Bhati.
Bhati informed a bench of Justices M R Shah and M M Sundresh, which had ordered a comprehensive survey of migrant labourers who faced extreme hardship and loss of job during the first lockdown in 2020, that the affidavit deals in detail with the steps taken by the Centre to ameliorate the conditions, especially food requirements, of a large percentage of the population.
