<p><strong>Male: </strong>Nine Indians were among 10 people who died early on Thursday when a major fire broke out in the garage below a cramped living quarters that housed foreign workers here in the Maldivian capital, authorities said. <p id="3">External affairs minister S Jaishankar said he was deeply aggrieved by the tragic loss of lives in the fire incident in Male and the full details regarding Indians were being ascertained by the high commission and officials were contacting affected families. &ldquo;Received a call from FM @abdulla_shahid expressing condolences and assuring full support. High Commission is closely working with Maldivian authorities on this matter,&rdquo; he added.</p>
<p>The garage is on the ground floor of&nbsp;the building, while the first floor housed migrant workers. The living quarters had only a single window. There were 38 migrant workers from Bangladesh, India and Sri Lanka living in the building, with a gas cylinder next to each bed, MNDF said.</p>
<p id="6">Maldives National Disaster Authority said 28 people were rescued. MNDF Fire and Rescue Service said the garage had been the scene of a previous fire &mdash; which resulted from negligence while working with gas cutters.</p>
