New Delhi: The India Meteorological Department (IMD), which had placed the city under &ldquo;yellow alert&rdquo; on Saturday, warning of moderate to intense rain showers at isolated areas on Saturday, lifted the alert for Sunday.
According to the weather analysts, the weather system of a cyclonic circulation interacting with a western disturbance was keeping Delhi-NCR and major parts of northwest India flooded, will start weakening from Sunday night or Monday evening. The moisture-laden easterly winds will also start changing the direction from late Sunday night or Monday morning, officials at IMD said.
&ldquo;On Saturday, the cyclonic circulation hovering over northeast Rajasthan was about 100km south of Alwar, which is very close to Delhi. Thus, there were more clouds and at some areas the intensity of rain towards evening was high. However, the weather system will now weaken over next 24-36 hours and the effect of interaction between cyclonic circulation and western disturbance will also weaken. On Sunday there will be rain, but the intensity will drop, and we expect that by Sunday evening or night the wind direction will change from moist Easterly to dry westerly and north-westerly,&rdquo; said RK Jenamani, senior scientists IMD. He added that by November 26, the maximum temperature will begin to rise.
&ldquo;The temperature will rise gradually by five to six degree Celsius over the next five to six days,&rdquo; Jenamani added.
According to IMD, between 8.30am to 8.30pm, city&rsquo;s base station Safdarjung has recorded 18.6mm of rain, which falls in the &ldquo;moderate&rdquo; category. During the same period, Palam recorded 23.7mm. Jafarpur was likely the wettest spot in the city on Saturday, logging 55.5mm of rain in the 12-hour period.
Meanwhile, the maximum temperature of the city remained about seven notches below the day&rsquo;s normal. Safdarjung recorded at 27.2 degree Celsius, against 27.6 degree Celsius a day earlier. The minimum temperature on Saturday was recorded at 22.6 degree Celsius, a notch below the day&rsquo;s normal.
The city&rsquo;s air quality remained satisfactory, close to the &ldquo;good&rdquo; zone. The air quality index, on a scale of 0 to 500, on Saturday was 54 against 57 a day earlier.
According to IMD, while the average rainfall at base station Safdarjung for month of September was 49% deficit till Friday morning came to 25% surplus by Saturday morning.&nbsp;
