"I can't express my happiness at being chosen for the national award for the empowerment of persons with disabilities for 2021. I come from a place where girls are still struggling to step out of the home to go to school," said Pooja, the only graduate in her family. Her father is a daily wager.

She was born in Bhind, where the gender ratio is 837 women per 1,000 men (2011 Census), the lowest in MP, and a female literacy rate of 63.1%. Of all the&nbsp;challenges, water was the one she feared most. She participates in the VL1 category in kayaking and canoeing, which is for players with the highest physical disability. In August this year, she won India's first medal at the ICF Canoe Sprint World Championships in Halifax, Canada.
"I used to attend a coaching class for competitive exams in Bhind. On the way, I would see para-watersports players practicing at Gauri Lake," said Pooja.&nbsp;She would sit and watch them practice for hours. The coaches at Gauri Lake saw this and offered to train her for free.&nbsp;"That was the turning point of my life," she recalls. "Coach Mayank Thakur and president of Indian Kayaking and Canoeing Association Prashant Kushwaha changed my life," said Pooja.
Backed by her father, Pooja began competing in national championships and then in foreign shores. She has won four international medals (2 gold) and 10 national medals (7 gold).
