The accused, identified as Ankur (22), is a resident of Dayalpur. He is a class XII dropout and currently unemployed. Cops said over 57 kg of cannabis was recovered from the Honda Civic he was driving.
According to police, constable Harender and head constable Amrish were on patrol duty Tuesday night when they spotted Ankur's car and asked him to cooperate for checking.
"Seeing the cops, he reversed the vehicle in order to escape. Constable Harender, who was standing right behind, jumped on the car to save himself and clung to it. After a few metres, the driver hit a wall, injuring Harender critically. As soon as the vehicle came to a halt, head constable Amrish managed to catch the driver," said deputy commissioner of police (northeast) Sanjay Kumar Sain.
"When the vehicle was searched, 11 packets wrapped in a brown tape and containing 57.7 kg of cannabis were found stashed in the boot. A crime&nbsp;and forensics team was called to the spot for a detailed inspection. The vehicle has been seized," Sain said, adding that a case under relevant sections of IPC and NDPS Act was registered at Karawal Nagar police station.
Police said during interrogation, Ankur disclosed that he had been working as a driver for one Rohit, whom he had met through one of his friends, Pankaj.
"He said Rohit lured him by promising Rs 20,000 for each trip to transport drugs across states. Further investigation is underway," he said.
