New Delhi: PM Narendra Modi on Friday called for correcting distortions in pages of India&rsquo;s history which, he said, were written as part of a conspiracy during the colonial era and stressed on the need to celebrate the country&rsquo;s heritage and its hitherto ignored unsung bravehearts, reports Manash Gohain.
At the 400th birth anniversary of legendary Ahom general Lachit Barphukan, Modi said, &ldquo;The history of India is not just about slavery. It is about emerging victorious, it&nbsp;is about the valour of countless greats. It is about standing against tyranny with unprecedented courage.&rdquo;&nbsp;

New Delhi: The grand celebrations commemorating legendary Ahom general Lachit Barphukan, the great hero from Assam who stalled the march of the Mughals, culminated with a clarion call by the PM to follow the life principle &mdash; &lsquo;Nation First&rsquo; &mdash; of the hero of the &lsquo;Battle of Saraighat&rsquo;.
Addressing the valedictory function on Friday, he said, &ldquo;Our collective sense of history should not be confined to a few centuries or decades.&rdquo; He also called for making the north-eastern region the hub of India&rsquo;s growth story.
The PM said unfortunately even after Independence, the history which was written as part of a conspiracy during the colonial era continued to be taught. &ldquo;After independence there was a need to change the agenda of foreigners who made us slaves, but it did not happen. The stories of fierce resistance to tyranny in every part of the country were&nbsp;wilfully suppressed,&rdquo; Modi said. &ldquo;The mistake of not keeping those events in the mainstream is being rectified now,&rdquo; he added.
The PM said the unmatched bravery in Assam and the northeast was evident as they had repulsed the invasions of Turks, Afghans and Mughals. &ldquo;Even though&nbsp;the Mughals had captured Guwahati, it was bravehearts like Barphukan who won independence from the clutches of tyrannical rulers.&rdquo;
He recalled how Barphukan had kept national interest above blood relations and did not hesitate to punish even his close relatives. &ldquo;Lachit Barphukan&rsquo;s life inspires us to rise above the dynasty and think about the country. He had said no relationship is bigger than the country,&rdquo; hesaid.
Modi suggested creating a grand theatre play on Lachit Barphukan on the lines of the one on Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and enact it across the country. He also released the book &lsquo;Lachit Borphukan &ndash; Assam&rsquo;s Hero Who Halted the Mughals&rsquo; &mdash; on the occasion.
The PM said the life and times of immortal sons like Lachit Barphukan are an inspiration to fulfil the resolutions of the &lsquo;Amrit Kaal&rsquo;. He emphasised that when a nation knows its real past, only then it can proceed in the correct direction for the future.&nbsp;
