Delhi's first treatment, storage and disposal facility (TSDF), which became functional in March this year, has handled around 1,400 metric tonnes of hazardous waste, which was released from industries, till May. However, experts pointed out that apart from industries, households release hazardous waste like discarded lamps or batteries that mostly go to landfill sites due to non-segregation of waste at the source level.
According to a report prepared by Delhi Pollution Control Committee, the capital generates a total of 2,944.7 MT/year of hazardous waste, which is released from 2,318 industries. Officials said a huge quantity of hazardous waste is lying in the premises of the common effluent treatment plants. The TSDF facility, which is situated in the Bawana industrial area, can treat nearly 60,000 tonnes of hazardous waste in a year.
