India's post-pandemic air travel revival has been led by domestic traffic that was till recently fast clawing back to pre-Covid levels but that growth has now been affected by sky-high airfares caused by a combination of factors like a weakening rupee, record high jet fuel prices and capacity constraints with dozens of IndiGo and GoAir Airbus A320s grounded awaiting engines from both Pratt &amp; Whitey and CFM. Still, pent-up demand and revival of business travel are taking flyer number back to 2019 levels though at a slower pace due to high fares. Airports Authority of India data shows IGIA handled 38.3 lakh domestic passengers in September 2022, only 9% less than 42.2 lakh in September 2019. And it saw 12.4 international passengers in September 2022, 16% less than 14.7 lakh in same month of 2019.
Keen to develop IGIA as a mega global hub, the aviation ministry is coordinating with GMR-led DIAL and mega airlines Tata Group which is consolidating its four carriers led by Air India and IndiGo - to achieve the same. The transit area at T3 has been expanded; capacity is being added at T1 and T3 and the fourth runway will open early next year along with&nbsp;India's first elevated taxiway later in 2023.
DIAL has sent a plan to link IGIA's terminals by an automated people mover (APM) or air train to the aviation ministry for examining how this Rs 2,500-crore project could be funded. The proposed air train that will be partially underground, surface and elevated air train is a must for seamless transfer between terminals for an airport that will be handling 10 crore passengers annually before the end of this decade.
