Dehradun: At India&rsquo;s premier institute for the blind in Dehradun, which currently has four out of eight players in the national blind football team, visually-impaired students are following the ongoing FIFA World Cup by religiously listening to commentary daily and replicating their favourite player&rsquo;s moves during practice drills.
Here, at National Institute for Empowerment of Persons with Visual Disabilities (NIEPVD), the students often debate over who is the real GOAT (greatest of all time), Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo, and analyse the possible impact on Brazil&rsquo;s performance in their upcoming matches after Neymar&rsquo;s injury against Serbia. TOI spent a day with the students on Sunday, watching how they are imbibing nuances and picking up points they can apply to their own game by hearing about the action at the tournament.
Every day, after classes end, Negi and his fellow footballers of the institute gather at the sports room with their coach, Naresh Singh Nayal. The coach watches&nbsp;the match on his mobile phone and shares with his students the action happening on the field, interspersing it with technical details which he feels the players should pick up.
As the players carefully listen, they internalise some of the moves which they need to practice in their own game. Of the eight-member national squad of blind football, four are from NIEVPD along with Nayal, who is the assistant coach of the national blind team.
Negi added that despite not being able to watch the match, they can &ldquo;visualise it completely in their minds by carefully listening to the detailed live commentary of the coach.&rdquo; &ldquo;We watch the players play in our minds. We completely visualise how they attack, dodge or defend. We can figure out even the build of the players and their jersey numbers and colours,&rdquo; said Negi.
