Dehradun: The ministry of defence (MoD) has sought information on the British-era names of roads, schools, towns and other establishments under the cantonment areas of Uttarakhand so as to rename them with those "relevant to local culture".
Defence officials in Uttarakhand on Friday said a proposal has been made to change the name of the popular tourist town of Lansdowne Cantonment (the regimental centre of Garhwal Rifles) to 'Kalon Danda', which was its "original name".
An army officer of the Uttarakhand subarea said, "The MoD had sent a letter to the concerned authorities. A suggestion has been made to change the name Lansdowne to Kalon Danda which in Garhwali means 'black mountain'. The place was earlier known by that name until the 19th century when Britishers renamed it to honour Lord Lansdowne, the then viceroy of India." Landour Cantonment near Mussoorie, and Clement Town, Turner Road and some areas under cantonment boards in Dehradun are also on the radar, the officer said, adding: "But a final list of existing names with proposed ones is yet to be sent to the MoD".
