New Delhi: Seventy-five infrastructure projects - including 45 bridges, 27 roads, two helipads and a 'carbon-neutral habitat' built at a total cost of Rs 2,180 crore were dedicated to the nation by defence minister Rajnath Singh on Friday.
The projects spread across six states and two UTS, including forward areas in Ladakh, J&amp;K and Arunachal Pradesh-were inaugurated at a function held at the Darbuk-ShyokDaulat Beg Oldi (DS-DBO) road, which provides connectivity to the crucial DBO advance landing ground and post in eastern Ladakh near the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China.
"The highlight of the event was the on site inauguration of the 120-metrelong 'Class-70' Shyok Setu on the DS-DBO Road at an altitude 14,000 feet by the defence minister. The bridge will be of strategic importance as it will facilitate logistics movement of the armed forces," a defence ministry official said.
Inaugurating the other projects virtually, Singh said the government is committed to ensure progress of far-flung areas to fulfil the security needs of the country.
He said "infrastructure development and the valour of the armed forces" were the main reasons that helped India "effectively deal with the recent situation" in the northern sector, in a reference to the continuing 29-month long military confrontation with China in eastern Ladakh.
"Lack of infrastructure development in J&amp;K for decades after Independence was one of the reasons behind the rise of terrorism in the UT. These internal disturbances resulted in significant decline in tourist footfall that also impacted Ladakh as well as the entire nation," said Singh.
"Now, due to the government's efforts, the region is witnessing a new dawn of peace and progress. Our aim is to continue with the development of all states/UTs of the country," he added.
India, France kick off air combat drill 
India on Friday kicked off the 'Garuda' air combat exercise with France at Jodhpur. The seventh edition of the exercise, which will continue till November 12, "will provide a platform to the IAF and the French Air and Space Force to enhance operational capability and interoperability", an IAF spokesperson said. France has deployed four Rafale fighters and one A-330 multi-role tanker transport aircraft along with a contingent of 220 personnel. IAF is participating with Rafale, Sukhoi-30MKI, Tejas and Jaguar jets as well as Mi-17 and the new indigenous Prachanda light combat helicopters.&nbsp;
