Deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia on Tuesday said the secretary of training and technical education (TTE) "forcibly tried" to discontinue the "Dilli ki Yogshala" programme and "sabotage" the efforts of Delhi government in providing free yoga classes to thousands of people.
Sisodia, who also holds the charge of higher education and TTE departments, asked Alice Vaz, the secretary of TTE department, to explain within 24 hours on what basis did she announce discontinuation of the Yoga programme and why was the decision taken without any discussion with the minister in-charge.
Vaz could not be contacted despite repeated attempts.
Under the programme, more than 17,000 people get free yoga classes at 590 locations in the city from instructors provided by Delhi government.&nbsp;The initiative was announced by chief minister Arvind Kejriwal in December 2021.
In his note, Sisodia said Delhi assembly had passed the budget for Delhi Pharmaceutical Sciences and Research University (DPSRU) to start the Centre for Meditation and Yoga Sciences (CMYS) to provide certificate and diploma programmes to train instructors who, in turn, would provide free classes under the "Dilli Ki Yogshala" programme.
In the 28th meeting of the board of governors of DPSRU on September 30, upon the "insistence" of the secretary (TTE), it was decided to discontinue the programme despite many board members wanting&nbsp;to continue it, added Sisodia.
"Even the Prime Minister promotes the adoption of Yoga through promotional events on International Day of Yoga. Despite knowing this, secretary TTE is wrongly and forcibly trying to discontinue the programme and sabotage the efforts of Delhi government to provide yoga classes for the benefit of thousands of Delhiites," Sisodia's note mentioned.
Quoting Section 6(4) of DPSRU Act, 2008, Sisodia said the university could organise and undertake extramural studies and extension services. "If the Act says DPSRU can undertake extension services, on what basis did the secretary say that the Yoga programme has to be discontinued," stated the deputy CM.

The government wants to continue to programme and, in fact, increase its scale. Why was the decision to discontinue the programme taken without any discussion with the minister in-charge?" Practising yoga is good for mental and physical health. In a city bedevilled by noxious air, it is particularly beneficial for the lungs. The free yoga scheme has been useful to thousands of Delhi residents. It should be continued.
