<p id="1"><strong>New Delhi: </strong>The place is steeped in history, but lack of infrastructure, congested lanes, poor sanitation and illegal structures have let Chandni Chowk down. The assembly constituency of Chandni Chowk comprises three wards &mdash; Chandni Chowk, Jama Masjid and Civil Lines. All of them have a significant chunk of trading communities.</p>
<p id="2">While the corporation has been working on a mega parking project to cater to the needs of Chandni Chowk and Jama Masjid, autos, cycles and cars kept randomly on roadsides is a common sight. Locals <strong>TOI </strong>spoke to said the roads are so cramped &ldquo;that not even two autorickshaws can pass each other&rdquo;.</p>
<p id="3">&ldquo;The streets are highly congested and there is no proper parking either. Also, after Chandni Chowk became a non-motorised zone, our customers are unable to reach us,&rdquo; said Tarun Gupta, president of Dariba Jewellers Association in Chandni Chowk ward. While a spot check revealed most of the streets to be clean, roads were found uneven in several places and some drains were clogged. In many parts, vehicles were parked haphazardly and low-hanging overhead wires dangled dangerously.</p>
<p id="4">Since the last municipal election, Chandni Chowk ward has undergone a significant change, including the revamp of a kilometre-long main road that has been non-motorised and made free of encroachments. This was a joint effort of several agencies, including MCD.</p>

<p id="5">&ldquo;The hawkers and street vendors are a major problem. While the street was revamped a year ago, there is a lack of maintenance on part of all the agencies. MCD earlier came up with zone development plans for all areas but that has remained on paper. The civic body has also started recovery of money by way of notices of conversion charges, which is illegal,&rdquo; claimed Sanjay Bhargava, president, Chandni Chowk Sarv Vyapar Mandal.</p>
<p id="6">Jama Masjid ward, lying in the interiors of the Old City, does not have any room for expansion, but has seen mushrooming of shops and commercial establishments in the past few years. &ldquo;The biggest concern is rapid commercialisation. Shops and other establishments are sprouting in residential areas without any check,&rdquo; said Mohmmad Amin, who has been staying in Jama Masjid area for about 30 years.</p>

<p id="2">While BJP&rsquo;s Ravinder Kumar and Avtar Singh were the councillors from Chandni Chowk and Civil Lines wards, Sultana Abad, who contested on a Congress ticket in 2017, was the Jama Masjid councillor. She is contesting from AAP this time. All three are seeking re-election.</p>

<p id="2">Singh, who was also former mayor of the erstwhile North Delhi Municipal Corporation, said, &ldquo;I made a lot of improvements as councillor and will continue to do so, if reelected. After delimitation, some changes like the addition of two booths is a plus for me.&rdquo;</p>
