"Once Upon Another Time," the title of her 2012 EP, is one of several numbers on which she is joined by singers David Ryan Harris and Emily King, who are terrific, though "why them?" is never explained.Although it is standard operating procedure for the "Kennedy Center" series, Ms. Bareilles might have done better without the gushing interviews with her friends and colleagues, or the philosophizing about art and connections. Her talents sell themselves, and she deserves to celebrate the holiday like everybody else, with or without the National Symphony Orchestra. Ms. Bareilles seems to remember just in time to say "Happy New Year" before the performers leave the stage, Mr. Wainwright wearing a wry look that says, "Oh right... it's New Year's Eve."
