The TTC and Amalgamated Transit Union Local 113, representing almost 12,000 workers, reached a settlement "that allows us to put the strike on hold," the union said shortly before midnight on Thursday, as negotiations went down to the wire.
Toronto narrowly avoided potential commuting chaos — for now — after the TTC and the union representing its front-line workers reached a framework settlement late Thursday on a new contract.
“It is a tentative deal. We just need to cross the t’s and dot the i’s,” said TTC CEO Rick Leary.
Specific details of the agreement will likely not be disclosed until union members have voted on it. It must get a majority vote to be ratified. The last time TTC workers went on strike in 2008 was after a tentative deal was rejected by union members.
Weeks of negotiations between Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) Local 113 — representing 12,000 bus and subway operators, collectors, maintenance workers and more — and TTC management had stalled over wages, job security and benefits in the lead-up to an optimistic shift in tone on Thursday night.
Framework deal avoids traffic chaos
Details still being worked out, but buses, streetcars and subways continue to operate as usual
