How did you get into photography?
My first steps were, from an early age, born out of a fascination for the natural world. I wanted to be a vet when I left school. Fifty years older and still with a passion for nature, wildlife, and the peace that I gained from it and with photography as one of my hobbies, the decision was ready made. With the arrival of Covid and furlough, I swapped chefs’ whites for camouflage clothes, upgraded my camera kit and instead of creative cooking started on creative and stunning wildlife photography.

Current kit
I use the OM System OM-1, but also use the Canon EOS R6. A current, long-term project alongside my digital photography, has seen me using an analogue Mamiya (1969) C220, 120 medium format film vintage camera. In a world dominated by high-tech DSLR cameras and mirrorless marvels, vintage cameras often have a distinct look and feel that can lend a certain charm to images. The grain, colour rendition, and subtle imperfections can create a more ‘human’ and less perfect aesthetic. Using a vintage camera forces me to slow down and be more deliberate in my shots. There is no instant gratification or endless burst mode. This leads to a more considered and thoughtful approach to my photography and there is a certain thrill and challenge in using vintage equipment. It can be rewarding to overcome the limitations and produce stunning photographs. The results are starting to come in, and it is thrilling.
