Choosing the right camera body

For wildlife photography, the camera body you select needs to provide a balance of image quality, fast autofocus, and good low-light performance. In 2024, there are several excellent options for beginners, with excellent high-ISO performance.

Important camera features to look for

• Autofocus Speed and Tracking: Wildlife can be unpredictable, and fast autofocus is key to capturing fleeting moments. Cameras with animal-eye autofocus can be particularly useful.

• Weather Sealing: Since wildlife photography often involves shooting in challenging environments, look for a camera with good weather sealing to protect it from dust, moisture, and extreme conditions.

• Burst Mode: Capturing fast-moving animals requires a camera that can shoot several frames per second (fps). Beginners should look for cameras with at least 8-10 fps for reliable action shots.

When you’re beginning, it will be difficult to find bodies that have all these features without spending too much money, but we have options which provide some of these that you can start off with.

Mirrorless cameras

Mirrorless cameras have become increasingly popular among wildlife photographers due to their compact size and advanced technology. Some top beginner-friendly models include:

• Sony Alpha 6400: A compact and affordable APS-C mirrorless camera with excellent autofocus tracking, ideal for capturing fast-moving wildlife. Its 24 MP sensor provides a balance between image quality, low-light performance and a 11 fps burst mode that’s plenty for wildlife shooting.

• Canon EOS R50: One of Canon’s budget-friendly mirrorless cameras, perfect for wildlife enthusiasts. It offers 24.2MP resolution, 15 fps continuous shooting, and an intuitive interface for beginners.
