I have been shooting photos since the age of 14, but only really got into photography after purchasing my first digital camera, a Nikon D70, when I was in my mid-20s. I have experimented with a lot of different genres over the years, from music and events to weddings and wildlife. But in 2019, I bought my first macro lens (a Laowa 60mm f/2.8 2X Ultra-Macro) and instantly fell in love with the hidden world of invertebrates.&nbsp;The key essentials for shooting macro photography are pretty simple - a flash unit and a diffuser, and a dedicated lens.&nbsp;The other thing that really helps is having a Micro Four Thirds camera. This allows for a greater depth of field compared with a full-frame camera and that's why I only use OM System cameras for my work now.

When looking for insects, I will often go out during the day and return early the next morning or evening - this gives me a better chance of finding subjects that are still and easier to photograph. It usually involves getting down to ground level to spot them. For this solitary bee, for example, I would look for small holes in sandy soil as that's where they nest. I have a Godox V350 attached to the hot shoe and use a Cygnustech macro diffuser to illuminate the subject.
